Sia ‘Chandelier’ – Single Review

After ‘retiring’ from the music business 4 years ago, Sia has finally released her own material: ‘Chandelier’, the lead single from her upcoming sixth album due out this summer. Since her last album We Are Born in 2010, the Australian singer-songwriter has been working on pop hits for Katy Perry, Rihanna and Britney Spears. Clearly Sia has a golden touch as ‘Chandelier’ is her highest charting single so far peaking at number 4 in ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) charts.

Despite being retired from the music industry, Sia has achieved international success with hits such as ‘Titanium’ with David Guetta and ‘Wild Ones’ with Flo Rida. She also recently executive produced Kylie Minogue’s latest album Kiss Me Once.

Whether writing for herself or others, she is able to express love in a uniquely simplistic way. Her style is written all over every song she is involved with included the infectious ‘Diamonds’ and ‘double Rainbow’ performed by Rihanna and Katy Perry. ‘Chandelier’ is no different, the lyrics leak desperation in this mid-tempo party track.

The track sets an emotional breakdown in the party culture that is prominent in pop music today and “Keep my cup full until morning light, ‘cause I’m just holding on for night.”

Sia has finally found a way to marry her quirky pop style with bombast to create her most complete sounding song to date. With Grammy Award winning producer, Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, P!nk) at the helm of the track, the synth undertones and a dramatic string flourish enhance Sia’s powerful vocals without drowning her out.

Sia may have had four years off from being at the helm, but her voice is as powerful and timeless as ever. Her vocal acrobatics are astounding as she shows off her large range while maintaining raw power from end to end.

If ‘Chandelier’ is only the first taste of Sia’s upcoming album, then the standards are set high, and she is more than capable of surpassing them.
